when the best time to cut butterfly Bush’s?
I have a 8 ft. butterfly bush that needs cutting, is fall the best time to do this, and dose it matter how far I cut it back ,or where on the stem I cut it? thanks for any help
In the fall, if you live in a temperate zone, cut it back to the point you like it size wise. So if you want a 4′ butterfly bush (Buddlia), cut it to 4′. In the spring, cut it down further, maybe to 6″. The reason not to do it all at once, is let’s say you really want to leave it 2′ tall in the spring, but winter kills it back 2′, you’re left with only roots, whereas if you have 4′, less the 2′ kill back, gives you 2′. Do you get what I’m saying?
As for where, it should be just above a bud, or in the spring, a bit of new growth. The ‘clean up’ cut can be anywhere.
If you live in a warmer zone, reduce it to the size you want all at once, again, above a branch, bud or point of growth.
I hope that this helps
Good luck-
